MTV: Box-Office Report

It's safe to say blockbuster season is in full swing when a $50 million debut isn't enough to be #1 at the box-office.

"The Great Gatsby" beat industry expectations with a super strong $51.1 million opening over the weekend, which would have been enough for the top spot were it not for a certain Marvel Comics superhero. "Iron Man 3" held onto the #1 position for a second consecutive weekend with a $72.5 million domestic total, the fourth biggest second weekend in history after "The Avengers," "Avatar" and "The Dark Knight."

MTV: Box-Office Preview

F. Scott Fitzgerald is about to get his butt kicked by Stan Lee.

"Iron Man 3" is expected to dominate the box office for a second consecutive weekend, fending off competition from "The Great Gatsby" as easily as the Avengers take down villains. The third solo go-round from the Marvel Comics character won't have any problem taking down the latest cinematic adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 literary classic, which features Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role.

Even without his teammates, Iron Man can still take down the bad guys, even breaking box-office records around the world at the same time.

"Iron Man 3" blasted into North America with one of the biggest opening weekends ever, second only to "Marvel's The Avengers," which opened over the same weekend last year. Robert Downey Jr.'s third solo outing as the armor-clad comic book superhero brought in $175.3 million at the domestic box office. Only the $207.4 million opening weekend for "The Avengers" — which, of course, also featured Downey as Iron Man — stands in front of "Iron Man 3" in the record books.

Billboard: Revolver Golden Gods Awards Recap

The death of Slayer's Jeff Hanneman was announced just hours before Revolver Magazine's 2013 Golden Gods Awards, so it certainly cast a somber pall over the proceedings. But just as with the tragic deaths of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, Ronnie James Dio, Slipknot's Paul Gray and the Deftones’ Chi Cheng, the Slayer co-founder's passing served as a reminder of the spirit of community that has long dominated heavy metal as a subculture, a lifestyle and commercial genre. Performers, presenters and organizers chose to celebrate his life, lifting several glasses to the fallen "Big 4" guitarist throughout the night.

Thursday night's event at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles had already been planned to be filled with collaborations, from Metallica's cover of the Judas Priest classic "Rapid Fire" with Rob Halford to Anthrax's pairing with half of Pantera. Revolver Marketing Director Josh Bernstein told Billboard that Metallica has topped their wishlist since Golden Gods -- the only metal awards show in the U.S. -- debuted in 2009. "What a night! Metallica!" exclaimed executive editor Brandon Geist.

AP: Davey Havok Q&A

Davey Havok has expressed himself through many avenues, from hardcore to the darkly melodic platinum heights of AFI’s albums Sing The Sorrow and Decemberunderground to the electro-tinged harmonies of Blaqk Audio, who issued their second album last year. He’s topped the charts and starred on Broadway. And now he’s taking aim at the Barnes & Noble: Spring 2013 saw Havok in a swanky Hollywood hotel reading aloud from his debut novel, Pop Kids, about a fame seeking 17-year-old named Score. Havok spoke to altpress.com about the book, celebrity culture, Zac Efron, David Lynch, Spider-Man and the possibility of new AFI music arriving before 2014. CLICK HERE to read my Q&A.

AP: Passport: Australia Feature

Maybe you're in a band that dreams of touring the world. Perhaps you're a never-say-die music fan who attends more shows a week than family dinners. But we're pretty sure you wondered what it would be like to see some (or play with) cool bands in different parts of the world. That's why beginning this week, altpress.com is launching a new series called PASSPORT, where we will compare and contrast the differences in how the punk scenes of various countries function.

Ryan J. Downey starts our series with a piece centering on Australia. And if you ever complained about driving two hours to see a band, imagine what it would be like to have to travel, say 13 hours for one show...

"Pain & Gain" was the box-office champ in North America over the weekend, but it was a mighty Avenger who ruled overseas. CLICK HERE to read the rest of my report.

MTV: Box-Office Preview

This weekend, the Rock and Mark Wahlberg are staged to outmuscle Tom Cruise.

"Pain & Gain" puts director Michael Bay back in his "Bad Boys" buddy action-comedy zone. Wahlberg and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson star as bodybuilders-turned-criminals, based on real events in the late '90s. The movie is expected to collect over $20 million this weekend, which should be enough to beat last weekend's #1 film, "Oblivion."CLICK HERE.
