Billboard: Revolver Golden Gods Awards Recap

The death of Slayer's Jeff Hanneman was announced just hours before Revolver Magazine's 2013 Golden Gods Awards, so it certainly cast a somber pall over the proceedings. But just as with the tragic deaths of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, Ronnie James Dio, Slipknot's Paul Gray and the Deftones’ Chi Cheng, the Slayer co-founder's passing served as a reminder of the spirit of community that has long dominated heavy metal as a subculture, a lifestyle and commercial genre. Performers, presenters and organizers chose to celebrate his life, lifting several glasses to the fallen "Big 4" guitarist throughout the night.

Thursday night's event at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles had already been planned to be filled with collaborations, from Metallica's cover of the Judas Priest classic "Rapid Fire" with Rob Halford to Anthrax's pairing with half of Pantera. Revolver Marketing Director Josh Bernstein told Billboard that Metallica has topped their wishlist since Golden Gods -- the only metal awards show in the U.S. -- debuted in 2009. "What a night! Metallica!" exclaimed executive editor Brandon Geist.
